Week after week, River has been a rising team, both in strategy and in unity. Many in the media have indicated that the Millonarios are an inconsistent team that shows great football one match and horrendous play in another. Yesterday’s win against Argentinos Juniors showed the side of River that every fan wants to see, week after week. With a tremendous game by River’s promising star, Diego Buonanotte, the team from Ñunez defeated Diego Maradona’s second favorite club by a total score of 4-2.

The first half of the match gave the indication that River would have a bit of trouble handling the possession of the ball. Many chances went by but Diego Buonanotte gave a clear signal that he would be the one pushing the team. In the 32nd minute, he proved everyone right. With a strong shot outside the goalkeeping area, Diego put River on top of the match. Unfortunately this score would be temporary as Argentinos Juniors tied the match at the 40th minute off a confused River defense that keeps everyone biting their nails. Right before the final whistle of the half, River’s Ferrari shot a tremendous shot that rebounded of the post.

As the second half commenced, the fans started to chant a familiar phrase through out the Monumental Stadium. From every corner of the match, this chant could be heard, “El domingo cueste lo que cueste, el domingo tenemos que ganar!" which translates to “Whatever it takes, Next Sunday, we MUST win!” This is in reference to Sunday’s match with rivals Boca Juniors. Four minutes into the half, once again Diego Buonanotte put River on top of the match off a shot that rebounded off Argentino’s defense. This temporary lead got cut short again at the 12th minute off a doubtful penalty shot. This bitter tie was ruining a perfect chance to remain on top of the tournament when Sebastian Abreu became a hero once again. Off a center that was intended for Radamel Falcao, Abreu scored the third goal of the match as Falcao purposely let the centered pass go over him, confusing the opposing team’s defense. At the final minute of the match, Radamel Falcao scored the last goal for River and gave a huge sigh of relief inside the Monumental Stadium.

The next game for River is on Wednesday, the 30th, against San Lorenzo for the Copa Santander Libertadores. This promises to be a great match as former coach, Ramon Diaz and former player, Andres D’Alessandro play against the club that gave them everything.
