Who said that River couldn’t score in this tournament? I’m sorry, I did. Awhile back, I was furious at the fact the River could not score a goal with all of the potential that the team had. This afternoon, I was completely shut down as two of the biggest names in the team, Radamel Falcao and Alexis Sanchez gave the Millos a huge three points in the tournament. River defeated Velez Sarsfield at Liniers with a 2-0 score and the team jumped up to the top five spots of the Clausura tournament.

The first half of the match was a spectacular game play. It was probably the best forty-five minutes that Simeone has had as coach of River. At the 9th minute of the match, #21 (Sanchez) kicked a beautiful shot off a rebound in which the ball curved and landed to the goalkeeper’s right side. This Chilean player has demonstrated once again his ability to be the man of the match once again and prove all of his critics wrong. Celebrating his goal like his idol, Marcelo Salas, he got on one knee and gracefully looked down and pointed to the sky. At the 11th minute of the match, Radamel Falcao received an excellent pass by Abelairas, which went pass two players, and Radamel was able to get it past the keeper to give the Millos the 2-0 lead. The rest of the first half showcased a River with excellent talent and skill while Velez struggled to possess the ball.

The second half gave JP Carrizo the opportunity to demonstrate his goalkeeping skills once again. Time and time again, JP has been the “savior” of many matches. This game proved that once more as he saved interesting shots by Velez. Although River had the lead, the team decided to conserve the result and play it out to the end. One of the most interesting facts was that not one River player was called on any foul. On the other hand, Velez had a few players with yellow cards and one expulsion. River has been the Fair Play team of the tournament and it shows that class goes both ways, offensive and defensive. The Millos next match is against Universidad Catolica en Buenos Aires on March 26th for the 2008 Copa Santander Libertadores.
