What better way to start the tournament than to win at home, in front a multitude of fans. River was able to turn around a deceptive first half and win by two goals against the modest team of Gimnasia de Jujuy. This game was also the home opener for River under new head coach, Diego Simeone. It is always a great, motivational push when River wins the first game of the season because many in the media, including fans, have had River in the crosshairs after a great preseason performance and much was expected for this game.

The first half of the match was dominated by River but there was a lot of inconsistencies when approaching Gimansia's goal line. The midfield performed well and created lots of chances to score but all that was needed was that final push. The pressure was heavily weighed upon the whole team to perform spectacular and the desire to see the first goal was intense. After many failed attempts, River left the first half empty handed. Many doubted Simeone's strategy but the players did what they could to leave a somewhat satisfied fan base in the Monumental Stadium.

At fifth minute of the second half, everyone's prayers were answered as Abelairas scored the first goal of the match. Abelairas shot a beautiful free kick past Gimnasia's goal keeper and this erupted the whole stadium. This player has proven, week by week, that he is very dependable and needed in River's first line up. Ten minutes later, Ariel Ortega lobbied a perfect shot to Gimansia's goal area in which Ferrari sealed the match with a hard header. Although there were many chances to keep adding goals, the end result left a satisfying feeling with the players, coaching staff, and fans. This Wednesday, the 13th, River starts the journey in the Copa Santander Libertadores with the match in Lima, Peru against San Martin.
