Another match has passed in Group 5 of the Copa Santander Libertadores, and River has demonstrated that it has a lot of potential to win the Cup. In front of a packed Monumental Stadium, River once again defeated Universidad Catolica in Buenos Aires. The game was an important step in accessing he second round of the Cup and River did exactly what was needed. With goals from Radamel Falcao and Sebastian Abreu, the Millos got an important victory to secure the top spot in the group.

The fastest goal so far in this edition of the Copa Libertadores came at the 39th second of the first minute of the match. The “Enano” Buonanotte lobbied a center pass, which was received by Abreu. The Uruguayan passed the ball with a header to Falcao and off a rebound of the top bar and the goalkeeper, he was able to push the ball right back in to score. The stadium went crazy because this demonstrated to everybody that when River wants to play had, they can definitely do some damage. The whole first half was dominated by River and many chances were missed to extend the lead. Although Universidad Catolica had a few chances, they basically sat back and waited for River’s counter attacks.

The second half was quite laid back for both sides, but more so for River. The Millonarios started to fail in the midfield section and the Chilean side was able to quickly counter attack. Thanks to another great performance by our goalkeeper, JP Carrizo, the net was nil and no goals passed by our talented player. Towards the 71st minute of the half, Sebastian Abreu scored off a deflective pass by Nico Domingo. It was a beautiful goal in which the “Loco” made all his teammates celebrate along his side. River continued to dominate the match until the final whistle and the three points secured the top spot of the group.

River’s next match is against Arsenal of Sarandi on Sunday, the 30th and it looks like it could be a win since Arsenal has had a really ugly losing streak, in the League and in the Copa.
